Old Car Yard

So I was wandering around downtown a little bit, and I found this old car yard. I'm not sure how old it is, but it has tons of banged up, rusted, broken cars, and I was basically in heaven taking pictures.

6 Things about yours truly

Alright, julie over at Candy Hearts tagged me in 6 things, so here we go.
Posted by Picasa
1. This is me attempting to look like a marine.
2. I love Durham, and wish people would stop complaining about it; I love it even more in the summer, and I can't wait for enofest.
3. Nothing bugs me more than when people reinforce the stereotypes that people apply to them.
4. Modest mouse is coming on March 11, and I'm really excited.
5. I'm attending UNC-CH next year and I can't wait.
6. I believe it's better to have a few very close friendships than many shallow ones.

Using Digital

So, I got a digital camera, and have been messing around with it some. I have easy access to a darkroom now, but I'll need a digital camera when I graduate and darkroom access is no longer a daily free commodity. So far, Pros of Digital are lack of dust marks and ease of brightness/contrast control, cons are that I honestly find burning and dodging harder in photoshop, and that for some reason my whites get blown out a lot more with digital than with film.

Snow in North carolina is something to be appreciated.

I love my bamboo grove. Unfortunately, my neighbor does not and I have to constantly fight with her when she tries to use herbicide on it.

Belated Valentines Day

Clearly the Universe would like to wish everybody Happy Valentines Day.

An Ode to Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark is undoubtedly one of my favorite photographers, and these are just some samples of her work. She has a quality of capturing social awkwardness and pain that is very reminiscent of Diane Arbus, yet I think her pictures are much more powerful.

One of her most famous works is a documentary of circus life, I forget which country she was in at the time.

Father and Child.

From her work in a mental institution.

From her work with homeless families and children.

Not sure what the context for this picture is, but that face is powerful.

Best of Scholastic

I recently entered my work into the Scholastic competition, and won a few rewards. Last year the judging was... questionable in taste, but this year the winners contained quite a few very striking pictures, especially from east forsyth high school. These are some of my favorites from some of the winning photography portfolios. (Above image taken by My classmate Megan Goodwin)

Picture by Kelly hall, My favorite single image of the bunch.

Picture by Cyrus Banikazemi. This portfolio had beautiful portraits, but all the subjects held signs similar to the one above, and I thought they were a bit gimmicky and took away from the quality of the pictures. Magnificent job either way.

Normally I'm not a fan of staged photos, but these pictures turned out really well and I loved them. Taken by Yimeng Li.

Taken by my class mate Maddie Rumbaugh.

Taken by Elizabeth Cronin.

This image is from my favorite portfolio. The photographers name is sally garner and she is absolutely amazing, I love her pictures.

Antique Store

So someone told me about this crazy antique/statue/random crap shop, and I decided that it would be a fun place to shoot. Coolest store ever.
